The 2017 Session of ITU Council was hold in Geneva (Switzerland) on May 15-25. During the Session the main attention was paid to the discussion of such issues as implementation of the decisions of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the Agenda for Sustainable Development for the period up to 2030. Assistance in the IoT development, international public policy concerning Internet and other activities in this field, digital financial services and child protection in the online environment were also discussed during the Session.

Besides, participants discussed the work of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2016 (WTSA-2016), preparations for the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2017 (WTDC-17), the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19) and also the Plenipotentiary Conference 2018, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which will be held in 2018.  The ITU budget for 2018-2019 was also considered during the Session.

ITU Council  is held once a year and acts as the Union’s governing body in the interval between Plenipotentiary Conferences. Its role is to consider broad telecommunication policy issues to ensure that the Union's activities, policies and strategies fully respond to today's dynamic, rapidly changing telecommunications environment.

ITU Council also prepares a report on the policy and strategic planning of the ITU and responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the Union, coordinating work programmes, approving budgets and controlling finances and expenditure.

On the outcomes of the World Telecommunication Development Conference

The World Telecommunication Development Conference of the International Telecommunication Union, which was devoted to the theme “Iinformation and Communication Technologies for Sustainable Development Goals”, concluded its work In Buenos Aires (Argentina).

The Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus № 518 dated from July 12, 2017 made some additions and changes to the Rules for the telecommunication services provision and the Rules for the of lines, communication structures and radio communications protection in the Republic of Belarus.
