Today is the 110th anniversary of ITU Radio Regulations. In 1906 the first International Radiotelegraph Conference gathered 30  maritime states in Berlin to sign the "International Radiotelegraph Convention" establishing the principle of compulsory intercommunication between vessels at sea and the land. The annex to this Convention contained the first regulations governing wireless telegraphy. These regulations, which have since been expanded and revised by numerous radio conferences, are now known as the ITU Radio Regulations.

Today's Radio Regulations cover frequencies ranging from 9 kHz to 3000 GHz and includes the solutions of numerous World Radio Conferences such as WRC-95, WRC-97, WRC-2000, WRC-03, WRC-07, WRC-12 and WRC-15, which define the rights and obligations of ITU's Member States to use the spectrum and satellite orbit resources.

The regulations have become the base for wireless services development, they have also provided the protection of the needs and interesta of telecommunication facilities users. Over the last 110 years, the Radio Regulations have proven to be a perfectly suited instrument to govern the use of the frequency spectrum and satellite orbits, based on international cooperation and mutual understanding. More than 40 different radiocommunication services use the spectrum in order to provide the growing amount of users with high quality telecommunication service.

We are now witnessing the full deployment of the fourth generation (4G) mobile broadband systems, based on ITU standards known as International Mobile Telecommunications. The IMT-2020 ITU standards for the fifth generation (5G) are in process.
